The best number ever. It’s the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything.
42 was the answer given to the answer to Life the universe and everything by a rather large computer in Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy – Radio Show/Book/TV & Film.
”.... Thursdays – I never did get the hang of Thursdays….”

It’s one hell of a smart computer! But lets not forget that robot from the movie ‘Short Circuit’.
Forty-two, The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.
I was once the Fortyfirst a Stehr Weißbier quenched my thirst!
Mü is my home where i feel lost and sweet.
FORTHY TWO FOR EVER IN MY LIFE ITS RULEZ A LOT FOR EVER !!!
can someone explain the populairity of this number???
Douglas Adams’s version: 42 = The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.
My version: 42 = 2×21 gram (the weight of two lifes)
Well said, Viresz! I love 21 grams too. :)
Let’s not forget the question….
This number really does show up everywhere.
It is the answer. But WHAT was the question?
Who cares about the question ?
42: Fox Mulder’s apartement number-= if you don’t know who he is… then too bad!
The ultimate conundrum—42 is the answer. But how do we know what the answer means, when we do not know the question!?
WTF ?
Is this some Free Mason thing?
It is “the” answer. But we don’t know the question yet. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Answer_to_Life%2C_the_Universe%2C_and_Everything
Warning: Spoilers
fourty-two? Or did Adams meant, that life, the universe and everything are 4 2 (for two), for couples? Or was he just having a tea for two… ;-).
ITS A BLOODY NUMBER FUCKS SAKE
If this Adam you speak of was more than a story book character, being the first man on earth, would he understand the concept of the number 42?
The answer to life is different for everyone. And the answer to why my dog eats cat shit… I suppose this is 42 as well?
Vano, I believe Blacky was actually talking about the author of the book. You know, Douglas Adams?
Anyways, 42 is the wickedest number. Ever. Because it’s so effing random. It’s like “Cheese! 42!”
well, I guess 42 has a rival :) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481369/
Ah yes, but I still will ask anyone this, does it really make sense that there would be a universal ‘meaning of life’ answer? Or question for that matter?
50 is the best volume level
Don’t forget a towel!
THINK DEEP !!!!! w00tZ!
who came up with that? they deserve a pat on the back!
why is so popular the 42?? LOL !
I just love 7 hahaha… but I wanna know whyyyyy 42!!
Go watch A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
hitchikers guide to the galaxy was hilarious. alan rickman was the best.
The book’s better.
The book is always better and everybody knows. Know will everyone stop say it about movies based on books, we get it.
Calm down, will you?
BTW , have you read the book? (Not checking for ignorance, checking for conversation potential)
Nope, I’m just saying its always true and just goes without saying.
BTW sorry. I wasn’t trying to come off as an ass, just trying to make a point.
^ I agree that by default, the book is always better than the movie. However, in the case of Hitchhiker’s Guide, I think this fact is worth a special mention because:
a) The series at this point has been adapted to virtually every storytelling medium known to man, making it hard for anyone looking to get into it to find a starting point; and
b) The tremendous popularity of HGttG is actually based on the books, which would not necessarily be a person’s first guess if they were unfamiliar with the series.
I’m partial to the radio series too, but it is a bit hard to find, and really the books are what people are talking about when they’re talking about Hitchhiker’s Guide.
Moral of the story: read the books, damnit! :)
Don’t worry about it. I seem to have a knack for making people feel bad; I just responded to a similar response from
baileyon the Overpopulation post. There’s a radio series? Cool! The last time I listened to any stories via radio (discounting Prairie Home Companion) was when I was like 6.
Hmm, bailey’s name seems to have been crossed out. Any idea how to put hyphens around something without doing that?
You can put an ‘at’ sign on either side of the dashes like this:
@-bailey-@. The ‘at’ signs won’t normally show. I just figured that out.The radio series was actually the original incarnation of Hitchhiker’s Guide. You can almost tell when you read the books, as the dialouge sounds often like it was intended to be performed. If you’re up for it, I believe the unabridged version can be obtained from Amazon UK. Pricey, but a lot of fun.
-test, test, 1 2 3-Brilliant!
Thanks.
wow 42 such a kool number
its just a fucking number
Well actually, Deep Thought was producing a single answer to a single question, but in reality, the Universe is computing itself. As it does so, it maps out its own spacetime geometry to the ultimate precision allowed by the laws of physics. So… does it compute 42 as the answer to everything? Hmmmm…. :)
It will be my age when I die…
Don’t say that! :o
I am very curious? What is the origin of 42? I’ve read all the comments, and now my head hurts! I mean it really hurts.
If you haven’t read/watched/heard the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, than a) You should and b) This will mean nothing to you!
So if I read, watch or hear Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams all will become clear? Thank you!
Yes but what is the question? Oh I heard a great poem about a small lump of putty that some girl found under her armpit one day but i expect you would probably chew off your leg or something if i repeated it.
Also does anyone know where is the walker system in “Heroes”?
Saddam, the visual image is startling enough, thank you! All I know is that once I read this Galaxy Hiking book, everything will be okay.
Yes its all from Hitchhikers – don’t worry we are not all going mad or in some strange cult or masonic lodge – its just a book …. and a tv show …. and a film…. and originally a radio show!
