I have to say the more I travel in this vast and diverse landscape I am still suprised at the beauty which captures me.
since when Australia is a continent?
In school we were taught Australia was an Island Continent.
Of course australia is a continent. look at the map down the bottom or if you are into all that touristy cliche stuff turn the map upside down and look for that mass of land up the top. hehehe
When I was young (ok i guess i am still young) and travelled a lot, I had people ask me if we all walk upside down, if kangaroos were really delivering our mail and if it was true that we had koalas as pets. While the laws of gravity answered the first question nicely, the second i can not confirm. Now posties (as we affectionately call them) use little motor bikes, and they race past so fast i can never get a good look in to see if the poor bastard getting hassled by our dogs is a roo or not. If only dogs could speak ‘strane. The koalas on the other hand, cute and fury as they may be, are far too viscious to let in your house. Have you ever seen a nature doco on them when they ‘mate’? There is no mate about it.
but new zeland and australia are part of the “oceanía” (i don’t know the word in english) continent!
Seriously, a continent has to be one land mass… check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent. You might argue Oz isn’t big enough… but you can’t include rest of oceania and call it all one continent…
That is funny, I guess some people never studied geography? ;) Australia IS the best, I love it.
so then, every island is a continent?
I LIV IS AUSTRALIA AND ITS GR8 HERE !
But which is the best state? :) I think I gonna move to Perth
That’s hard. I’ve lived in 3 states, and I think I prefer Victoria or the southern parts of Queensland.
nsw its soooo awsum and more events r held there like australian idol
Spent the best year of my life in this amazing country
australia is totally awesome and i would never even think of living somewhere else. yes, australia is an island, country AND continent. im still in school…i should know!
albany is the coolest town EVER (you guys rock my sox off!) and W.A is the best state to live. although i do like to visit the others:P
The most beautiful country in the world.
IMO
I was taught that there are 7 continents in the world : Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. Whatever, I consider myself very lucky to live in this beautiful country of Australia.
Australasia!
Hope ya’ll aussies soon will getting some water. Droughts stinks.
Sadly Australia isn’t in Europe whoever put it as the best european country :P
aussie rox!! (i should no..ive lived here all my life…) and perth is the best city even though its kinda boring.. na jj
Is Australia a continent?
- MaryLou was taught that there are 7 continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. - I was taught that there are 6 continents : Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, America and Oceania (Australia being a part of Oceania) - Rob argues a continent has to be one land mass…
I think Rob made an interesting point but according to him : - Europe would not be a continent because it shares land with Asia. (Africa as well, although it is quite easy to assume the Suez canal makes the border. Thanks to the Panama Canal, North and South America can be fixed in the same way, but from a geographical point of view, is it relevant to distinguish Europe from Asia? I don’t think so.) - Antarctica would not be a continent because it is not a land mass, it is partially made of ice, the name for the land would be Antarctida (with a “d” as in Atlantida).
Questions : What is the best definition for continent? How many continents are on earth? Which ones?
§ If we assume all the territories have to fit in a continent, therefore I would answer 7 continents (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North-America, South-America and Oceania). On the other hand, if a continent is only one land mass (a huge island in other words / in which case Great-Britain might be apart from Eurasia whereas New-Zealand and Vanuatu would not fit anywhere), I would answer 6 continents (Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Asia, North-America and South-America).
Anyway, I don’t know if it is a nice continent but I’m sure it’s a very nice country.
Hey, If you are thinking of going anywhere, you must travel to Perth, of course, not just because I live there, but Perth has Australia’s best climate, recieving the most sunny days :) – That’s why we are always so nice people compared to thoese Sydney bogans (sorry, but true) – Perth has better hospitality, such a charming City, oh and you must go to Fremantle – Worlds best fish and chips :P Rockingham – were I live, host’s Australia’s 12th best beach, :P and is quite a boring place – massive shopping centre takes up the whole city (ha ha) – oh and Mandurah, Australia’s most picturesque coastal city, also Australia’s fastest growing, oh and just one more thing – You have to go to Mosman Park, Claremont, etc. – Has to have Australia’s best stores, houses (Mosman Park has Australia’s most expensive hosue $88 million) and on that subject, Perth and Surronds has the most highest land value compared to any other place in Australia!
I would like to travel from Perth to Sidney in the desert. Unfortunately Australia is far away, I will have to save money first.

I luv living in australia such a great country
I luv living in australia such a great country
I was born and raised in Canberra, Australia. To be honest the people here are crazy, sick, mean, dangerous, very racist, they stereotype, you feel like an outcast, they attack you and your children in the shopping centres, parks, schools, work, anywhere and everywhere, for no reason what so ever, the law is racist the people the police and the courts only help Anglo Australians, they hate muslims and Arabs and other muslim nations and other different background nations. The Anglo Australians took this country from the Aboriginies and ontop of that they are being so mean and racist to people with different backgrounds to theirs. They also have taken several other countries around the world from other people. I have never been happy living here. I have been bullied all my life and I would definently recommend another country which is friendlier to live in than this country. I am a friendly natured person and I am very good and religous. I believe in god and in doing good, but the people here are completly the opposite. They are mean and cold hearted and racist. The people in Sydney are more crazy and dangerous. I don't feel safe in this country. I don't know if there is a friendlier place in Australia than Canberra and Sydney. I have only lived in Canberra and have been to Sydney many times. I have been here all my life and can you beleive it I have no friends, thats how mean the people are here. God help me.
Cool place. Apparently it is one of the most well-off countries in the world regarding wealth.
On a list of the best countries to live in, made by the U.N, Australia was rated 2nd. (after Norway, before Canada)
Australia is, without a doubt, the best country and i'm one proud Australian.
If anyone is thinking about going to Australia then I recomend South Australia, we aren't called the festival state for nothing you know! We are also Australia's #1 recyclers, this means clean beaches and streets!
Hi, I enjoyed reading the comments regarding everyone's love for Australia...I'm not crazy...I want to go there too, of course!!! LOL!! I would like to get a working visa and live there, even, ...for a year or two! It's gotta be the best place to live in the world! You Aussie's make a minimum wage of $14.24 an hour!!!! HOTTDAMN!!! It looks sooooo beautiful! Any recommendations on where to live for a new-commer? I was thinking Sydney until I read the comments. Now I am thinking Perth, Mel, or Victoria!! I am an American and I would like to know if Aussie's are very welcoming of Americans or do we get treated like CRAP!!?!! LOL!!
Thanks a bunch!!!!
australia is the best. true story.
trust me, ive lived here all my life. <3
australia is the best. true story.
trust me, ive lived here all my life. <3
i went there this summer, hoping to get citizenship after highschool:]hmmmmm honest isnt your comment racist? I admit there are wankers here that discriminate against people but there not true aussies then, being a aussie doesn’t mean your white it means that you want to live here and accept others who want to live here, im as white as a ghost and alot of my friends arnt anglo, i live in an area that others say is a shit hole but im glad i live here i went to a very multicultural school and at the high school after graduation party i pasted out on this islanders couch he’s one of the coolest guys i know (though not a close friend) outta my close friends only ones white btw i live in greater western sydney (the burbs)
I still call Australia home!!
i love my country everyone loves theres. There is no country better then another in my opinion. There is no best country in the world. Its all a state on mind with people who think moving to another country will end there woes. Remember the grass is always greener on the other side. People don't seem to care about nationality or culture anymore or just enjoying the simple things in life because its the simple things that really matter.
and personally i don't like Australia. Never been there and don't plan ever going there. Know lots of people that went but i look at it like this, I don't care if a country has great sights or scenery or weather what makes a country really is the people not the land or climate etc because without people the country is just a piece of land.. I feel very sorry for that guy who posted that australians are viciously racist and unfortunately from what i've seen and heard of them they are exactly that. I don't mean to brush all people with one color but i've heard so many stories...and those of you that say 'hey don't call me racist its the other guy not all aussies are like ' yes true but a lot of them are more then in other countries and this is just the ones that get to travel imagine what the ones left behind are like. You have to ask yourself what are you doing to discourage this immature and regressive behaviour, if you sit and say nothing or laugh your just as guilty as the person who carries out the action imo.
You australians really need to wake up and stop your stupid racism, you must realise you look extremely backward and non cultured to the rest of the world.. it only hurts you in the long run its not smart, your not any better then anyone else like you think you are.. there is no grouping of people who stick together based on skin colour no no thats just losers with negative attitudes who look for an escape through skin colour to mask deeper issues in their lives. its just a sign of a inferiority complex manifested in outward racism. I know its hard being tucked all down there away from the rest of the world like you are but comon its 2008 ... Real people with love in their hearts don't act like this...
You do realize, jimbo, that you're extremely hypocritical and are infact the most racist person here.
You accuse the majority of australians of being racist, racist being racial discrimination and hate, yet you say that we think we're the best race in the world that we're ignorant andsay that it's hard for us to keep up with modern philosophy because of our geographical location.
You openley accuse us of being immature, dumb, backward and non-coltured and heartless. you say that everyone loves there country and would always place it as the best country in the world, you said you also share this love for your country and call it the best regardless of anything else and then you go and attack australians for doing it ourselves
And being australian isn't being born in australia it's to share a way of life and understanding with people, i have lebanese, samoan, english, american, croatian and aboriginal friends and they've never been descriminated against or been judged because of there race, and they're all just as australian as i am.
And for australian tourists commiting acts of assualt or agression, nearly all of that violence was provoked by racism towards australians rather than racism towards the country they were visiting, wich is more than most other countrys can say for themselves.
i suggest that you wake up and see how backwards and un-coltured you are.
