(From her official website ) Marilyn Monroe personified Hollywood glamour with an unparalleled glow and energy that enamored the world. Although she was an alluring beauty with voluptuous curves and a generous pout, Marilyn was more than a ‘50s sex goddess. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence, in combination with an innate sensuality, has endeared her to the global consciousness. She dominated the age of movie stars to become, without question, the most famous woman of the 20th Century.

Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962), was a Golden Globe Award-winning American actress, singer, model and pop icon. She was known for her comedic skills and screen presence, going on to become one of the most popular movie stars of the 1950s and early 1960s. At the later stages of her career, she worked towards serious roles with a measure of success. However, she faced disappointments in her career and personal life during her later years.

I mean c’mon, this is a no brainer. This she is what all other female sex symbols are compared to, and most are found wanting! She set the standard!

Is she considered a plus-sized chick? I think someone told me this once. I am not exactly thinking clearly.

megbarbiee
megbarbiee posted about 1 year ago

well i think today she would for sure be considered plus size but back then i think she was just considered beautiful and her curves made her the icon she still remains today..

Marilyn Monroe was a size 8. At the time, that was considered normal and healthy, and yes: BEAUTIFUL. Now everyone thinks skinny is beautiful.

In conclusion: By today's standards, she would be cnsidered plus-sized.

Panda^_^ posted about 1 year ago

Oh i see. That is awesome, It is quite retarded that people are willing to starve themselves to become what society believes to be "pretty"

I am a size 1-3 but i am short and i am kinda curvy... it's just the way i am built though. They are teaching young girls that they must be skinny when in fact they don't. They only need to be healthy and strut what they have.

megbarbiee
megbarbiee posted about 1 year ago

true but you have to remember that some girls conform and some do their own thing…also that some girls are just naturally thin so it is not true that people in general are willing to starve themselves…so are naturally thin and happy…cant forget that

She was a healthy size, a gorgeous woman, intelligent, talented and knew exactly how to get what she wanted. She is everything I could ever hope to acheive… She was doing the president for cripes sake…. (Not that I would touch George Bush chokes on vomit). She was the original american beauty and sex symbol, the only modern day woman to come close it Christina Aguleria

"The myth that Marilyn would be considered near plus-size today has become a battle cry in the culture wars over female body image," Seigel says. "The truism that the world's sexiest woman would be fat by today's glamour standards has been repeated unattributed in hundreds of articles and books.

"Nice try, but image activists will have to come up with other arguments," Seigel says. "Marilyn Monroe was not even close to a size 12." -Marilyn Monroe's Plu-Size Body Myth, NPR.org

At her heaviest she was 140lbs and she was 117lbs when she died. Her weight did fluctuated, but her body fat percentage is fairly low for most of her photos. She actually weight trained a bit (hence some definition in her arms in some photos), however she's no plus-size. Her waist is said to be around 23-25inch usually. And a size 12 dress from the 1950's isn't the same as a size 12 at Gap now. Often I wear a size 4 or Small dress, but around a 12 when it comes to dresses when I go and purshace patterns. And my waist is 26-27. I'm not a small girl, it's just that sizes are getting larger.

Does any of the girls who responded remember what Marilyn Monroe actually looked like? Have they seen her nude pics and pictures of her while she was still a brunette and post-surgery? She had plenty of plastic surgery. Along with dental work, she bleachd her brunette hair, had rhinoplasty, a chin implant, forehead extended, and some eyelid surgery... She also probably had breast augmentation as well. Look at various pictures of her and think a bit about it. It's so delusional to believe that she would be plus-size today. It's more plausible that she would be seen as larger back in the 50s and 60s, since the percentage of overweight women was lower and the dress sizes ran smaller.

She was apparently around a size 12 (sometimes i think in some pics possibly a size 10). She might have been considered a size 16 (which alot of people stilll think she was) but that would have only been in vintage sizing though. She was definately not a plus size woman.

Well, despite the hype, she actually had a BMI of 23.3 (bang in the middle of normal weight range) when she was at her heaviest.  At her lightest, which she was for the majority of her career, she had a BMI of 19.6 and was technically underweight.  A curvy figure, yes, she had a natural D cup and a small waist 22/23 inches.

Vintage sizes are incredibly deceptive.  I was born in the early 60's, and can remember wearing British size 8 jeans in the late 70's.  I still had some of my original clothing from that period which I decided to give away to an American friend's daughter who is a US size 2.  She couldn't get anywhere near fitting into them and was really shocked.  I had a 22" waist and 33" hips.  Sizes were a lot smaller back then.  I spoke with an ex model friend who is now in marketing and design - the new method of measuring is called "vanity sizing" and started in the bridal industry to make women feel better that their dress was a size smaller than they normally could get into.  It has spread very rapidly into the rest of clothing sizes.  The difference in modern sizes would mean that MM would be a 5' 5" size 2 by nowerdays standards (although she would still have had to deal with being a D cup and being "top heavy" makes a woman look a lot heavier than she actually is!).

I love how "The Best Celebrity to resurrect If It Were Possible" is even a choice!

But yea, i am definitly into oldtime movie stars now and it's all because of Ultraviolet's song Dead On the Dancefloor, lol.

I am in love with Miss Monroe and Lauren Bacall. <3
