You can run at least 3 different OSs on an Intel PC (Windows, Linux, Novell to name but a few) can you do that on a Mac?
You can choose from 100s of manufacturers for your graphics card, sound card, hard drive, optical drives, power supplies etc. etc. Can you do that on a Mac?
It’s not Apple VS. Intel/Microsoft/the PC it’s open architecture vs. closed. simple as.

Very old school questions, but here goes:
Answer to question 1 – Yes. Check out http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ and run through virtualisation: http://www.parallels.com/
Answer 2: Yes. The Mac Pro can do that: http://www.apple.com/macpro/ The macbooks are as upgradeable as any other laptop – which means Memory, Hard drives, Cardbus, etc.
Answer 3: Yes. Apple uses Intel motherboards and chipsets. Apple has a one way open architecture – it will run everything, but mac os x will be difficult to run on non-apple boxes (people have done it though).
Are apples more expensive than generic white box PCs. Yes. Are they competitive with brand PCs. Yes. Are Macs generally more reliable and of higher quality than PCs. Yes. Could you say the quality delta is greater than the price delta compared to PCs. Yes. Is Mac OS X the most advanced Operating System. Yes. Will they sustain the cutting edge advantage they have. Yes. Can you confidentially purchase a Mac, and if you are unhappy with it, delete Mac OS X and run Windows.
